Congrats on a fantastic race. I hope you do not get tired of hearing that! I last ran LHF in '85 as a student at ISU. I think there were a couple hundred that day. Somebody wrote and suggested a split race with the high school/college age going before the old people. Don't do it. I love to mix it up with the youngsters - they are the ones that add the real "life" to this race!

Just wanted to thank you for putting on another great event!
And I was so impressed with this year's shirt. As a member of the Ames Hash House Harriers, I am so excited that you would feature one of our runners on the front of the shirt in their Red Dress.
We had 40 Red Dress hashers this year.
See you next year - Doug

Hello Steve!
My name is Maggie Peters, and I was on a coed team called the "Flying
Chickens." I was just wondering what place our team was in the coed
team rankings because we are not listed. Did we do something to become
disqualified or were our results lost or something else? Just curious.
Have a great day!

Not a bad race, you should line up the haybales to jump over again, though, like in '95!

Answer; They now sell those hay bales for feed to area farmers, but I will look into it!

I want some more! This was my first year, and I plan on coming back for more punishment next November. I can think of no better way to spend a morning- in fact, if I was insane, I'd do it everyday. But I'm only mildly insane, so
once a year might cut it (although I can't guarantee it). Just one thing: next year, the turkey's mine, all you people out there in Iowa! Watch out! I might bring a whole team.

I have never been much of a runner, but I never knew I could have so much fun running 5.7 miles. I would like thank every single one of the volunteers and organizers who made it all possible. It was easy to see all the hard work that was put into this event. Thanks for a great time!!! Nov. 23 '00 is marked on my calender.

It was a great race Saturday. I decided before hand that I would run it for fun and not worry about where I placed. I had a really good time. I thought you did a really good job marking out the course. One of these years you need to get ESPN out there to cover the event. I think the average person would enjoy seeing an event such as this on television.Especially people jumping across the creeks, struggling up the hills, people getting muddy etc. It the event continues to grow, you might consider having two heats, and 8:30 start for the age groups, say 25 and higher and a 9 AM start for the grade school, high school and college students.

Awesome job! You and your team of volunteers did an excellent job! I am amazed at the growth of this race. I can't imagine having an extra 500 people show up in the last couple of days and being able to accomodate them. Great job!
I have ran the race the last four years, and don't plan on quitting until you make it a marathon through the park. Who knows, I would probably do that too! That is, if I could finish it!
Thanks!

P.S. I heard a pretty big belly flop at the first stream crossing! It was classic!

Living History Farms Race
Hey Guys,
I had a great time at your Cross Country Race, but the best time was had by the athletes from my Cross Country Team. Their fun started at the first stream crossing. Luckily, I was no where in sight. Something they say will not happen next year! I see it as a fox and hound chase! They crossed the line fully baptized by the Living History CC Race and can't wait till next year. One of my girl athletes said to me after the race, "If you would have told me I had to RUN a five mile plus race, I would have said NO WAY! But when you told me we would be running through farm fields and had to cross a stream 4 or 5 times and climb over fences I thought that sounds like fun!" I know she will be my biggest recruiter for next years race. Needless to say your Living "History" farm race with be part of our CC Team's "history" too. Can you imagine a CC Coach telling the team to go run a race and have fun with it and mean it? It could only be,The Living History Farm Race. Thanks again for a great experience!
Sincerely,
Mary B. Madsen

This was my first year running the race and although I have run many other road races in the past, this was by far the funnest race I have ever been in. My goal was to finish the coure and have fun and I didn't have a problem with either one of them. All the obstacles in the race is what made it challenging, yet obtainable. I couldn't believe the way runners helped other runners overcome the obstacles.
I can't wait to run next year and if for some reason the course needs to take on a longer distance, you won't be hearing any complaints from me. I didn't want the race to be over this year.
One last comment, what was with all the doughnuts? I'm used to bagels and bananas!!

A great workout and a good change of pace from the normal road races. Thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that there is an error on the website results under co-ed teams. The Braun Cows consisted of Christy Braun, Chris Gardner, Courtney Thompson, and Ryan Hardy. Steve from Des Moines was not on this team. Thought you might want to know of the error. Thanks, Christy Braun
P.S.
Hi, I emailed you yesterday indicating what I thought was an error in the LHF results. I am very sorry, but I found out today that my friend asked someone from work to be on our team...>The Braun Cows...but she didn't tell
me. Anyway, Steve Janssens is on our team and the results are correct. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused you.
Sincerely,
Christy Braun

Wow, you guys continue to amaze me. This must be about my 10th year for LHF and its always the best race I do. This year I brought about 25 runners from my cross country team and they had just as good a time. Living History Farms may be the most unique race in the nation, the organization is flawless and everyone always has fun. The kids I brought are already talking about next year. Thanks so much for all your work and dedication.

What a Race!!!! I grew up in Ames and always heard about the Living History Farms race being a very fun race to run. I really haven't ran much since I tore my ACL my senior year in High School, but after this race I am planning on running a lot more. I really owe the idea of running the race to my little sister. She is now a freshman in high school and just finished running in cross country. She thought it would be great if we could run together. I couldn't turn her down. My fiance jumped at the chance to run the race and also one of my best friends whose whole family ran (the Daus) also ran with us. I will tell you this it is going to take a lot to keep me from returning next year. Also Megan and I finished side by side, just the way a race like this should be finished. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations Steve, The Capital Striders, and Runner Stuff for another successful cross country run, on Saturday. I have lost track of the number of times I have run in this event and each time I wondered why, but can't give it up. There was an error in my age. You have listed me as 43 instead of 53. If I could retrieve 10 years I would claim it, but since age seems to be playing a factor in how fast I'm running, I will have continue to be 53 until l/15. I appreciate all your hard work to provide so many of us a memorable event.
Running has become a habit after 20+ years of doing it. Thanks for taking care of the correction.

Steve,
First let me say that I really enjoyed the challenge of the 99' farm race. Very well run, must be hard to do with over 2500 runners. The only thing I feel could be improved is the start. Most races have markers for mile pace to align people. I feel this will help the runners trying for a good time but not on the level of "winning". Myself for instance, ran at 8:50 pace, but the first mile took me 9:45 because of the slower runners and in some cases walkers in front of me. I was in the forward 25% of the start. Again the race is great, just wanted to put my 2 cents in.

I thought the race was great. It was my first time and I enjoyed the run immensely. Considering it is only the second XC race I've ever done I plan on making it a regular on my calendar. However, afterwards was a different story. I understand that there are a lot of things to handle but it came out looking very inefficient. ---- Keep things organized, ie the door prizes should also be drawn for not randomly picking numbers of the loudest yeller. I know most people only stayed for the drawing for the shoes (I did) and I can guarantee that next year a pair of shoes won't be worth two hours of my Sat. I might bring a canned item, but I won't stay.

Steve/LHFR volunteers:
I ran today and lost my new t-shirt. I drove all the way from Minneapolis, and got there a minute before the race started. It was an XL, and in my haste, I left it at the starting line, on top of one of the PA speakers. I don't know if someone picked it up or turned it in. I asked a woman to watch it for me, but she was obviously gone when I went back.
I know last year you sent some of my friends shirts when you ran a little short. If you found my shirt, or have any extras, I would be happy to pay for postage, just let me know. Thanks for putting on a great race! I thought it was even better than last year (mostly because I was actually in decent shape this year).

what happened to team phat?????

From: Josh Chapman
To: fitnesssports.com
This is Josh Chapman from Adel and i was a member of team phat which consisted Jaime Robertson, Roy Swinger, Nathan Robertson, Sean Winters, Luke Deboer, and I. Some how our team did not get factored in to the high school boys team scoring. Instead Jaime and Roy got added to two older guys and of course were scored as an open team. I had to figure out how we would have done on my own which it would have been 8th but it still upset me to know that we registered as a team but didn't get scored as a team. I think that in the future you should have a blank on the entry form to put who the rest of your team mates are. I think some how those other two guys had the same team name and some how you put them with two of our runners but i don't get how you totally left out three of our runners from the team scoring. Well I hope you use my suggestion about the blank on the registration form.
Josh Chapman
P.S.
I did enjoy the race. this was my second year running and it is a race i looked forward to running this year and i am looking forward to running it for as long as i can run. i have suggested this race to many people that i have met all over the country. i understand about the team we didn't mail them in all together but we all sent them on the same day so i can understand how something got messed up. i really appreciate the people that set this race up and help on race day they do a good job.

I really appreciate the Living History Farm race. Thanks for putting ittogether year after year. All the workers and sponsors do a leck of agood job.
I look forward to this race (or survival run) each year. It is one of only two or three races I do any more. Give a very big pat on the back to the one responsible for the nice weather this year! In my middle age, it seems a little more enjoyable to have warmth. I look forward to being back next fall.

I've run your race several times with my friends. This year my 10 year old son and 12 year old daughter ran the whole thing. I ran with my friends and when we finished turned and went back up the coarse a ways thinking it will be a while until they make it. To my surprise, they made it in one minute behind us! We all enjoyed it and I enjoyed hearing my kids reminisce about it later that day. Thanks for a fun race to
share with friends and now with family!

I am writing to tell you that this is the first time I ran this race. It was incredible. I am 28 and had not run a race in nine years. I was very surprised to get 84th. I trained hard for it and did not know what to expect. I want to do it every year now.
I have one complaint though. One of my teammates from Max Power was not put in the right place. He finished ten seconds behind me which would have put him in 88th. This would have put our team from 10th place to 8th. His name is Fr. Peter Mitchell. He is a twenty five year old Priest who is probably to humble to contact you and let you know of this injustice. I am not sure of what his number was, but it would have been close to mine. I guess at one
time you had him placed in 999th. He really did run a 35:11 and that does not put him back that far. I hope you will correct the mistake.

Again thank you very much. Next year I will train harder and see where I may end up. Of course next year I will probably have to beat an extra 500 people.
